Instead of learning how to count calories and measure grams, you’ll learn why food is your medicine, and why taking the pounds off and keeping them off isn’t as much about staying away from calories as it is about moderation, balancing your blood sugar, and understanding what controls your appetite. You’ll learn to choose the foods that work best for your body, and why you may want to shun health fads and eat more like your ancestors. I'm going to explain why insulin resistance and diabetes have reached epidemic levels in Westernized countries, how they develop, and why prescription drugs aren’t the answer.

For centuries, Asians have used some amazing natural herbal secrets for weight loss. I’ll reveal these to you. You’ll discover how simple lifestyle changes can help you ramp up your energy and drop the pounds. And you’ll learn about safe, effective nutrient supplements that work synergistically with your body’s natural tendency towards healing and balance. Nowhere in this book will you find instructions for exactly how much sugar, carbohydrate, fat, or protein you should eat. I'm not going to tell you to count calories, or eat certain percentages of fat. I will give you a few basic guidelines, but it’s critical to your own personal success in achieving your optimal health and weight that you determine what works best for your body. The process of finding out what works for you will increase your awareness of why and how you eat, how it affects your energy, your ability to think clearly, your digestion, and over the long term, your weight. No diet will fit you for a lifetime unless it suits you perfectly, and the only diet that will work for you is one that you personally create over time.

Our goal in writing this book is to help you become more aware about how you interact with food, and how to use it to benefit your health, as well as to enhance your eating pleasure. It’s up to you to use inherent common sense and discrimination to make better choices. For example, if you eat that chocolate volcano cake for dessert three times and then notice on the fourth time that you were irritable and craving sugar all the next day, then you have made progress. If you use that knowledge to eat less of it the fifth time or even eventually choose not to eat it, you are continuing to make progress. But you have not “lost” if you eat it again the seventh or tenth time and end up with a sugar hangover—your goal is to be aware of what’s happening in your body, not to achieve an unrealistic level of discipline or dessert deprivation. I want you to become a nutrition detective, not a health nut. I want you to use food for yourself, not against yourself. The goal is not to be as thin as a model, or run a marathon, the goal is balance and awareness. As you create your own balanced relationship with food, you’ll be amazed at how it spills over into the rest of your life. Not only will your energy and mental clarity increase, but you’ll increase your ability to achieve goals in all areas of your life!
