If You’re Having Trouble Sleeping Your Melatonin may be Low

SleepCheck is a saliva test kit that measures the level of melatonin in your system.

Why Test Melatonin Levels?

  • If you’re not sleeping well (insomnia).
  • If you’re taking a melatonin supplement or considering it.
  • If you’re sleepy and mentally foggy during the day.
  • Concerns about declining melatonin levels with age.

On the Melatonin Main Page you'll find links to articles about melatonin in the body, and the latest melatonin research.

Melatonin is known as the hormone of sleep. Made primarily in the pineal gland in the brain, this important hormone is secreted in response to darkness. In fact, light suppresses melatonin production, so if you’re a night owl or sleeping in less than darkness, your body will produce less melatonin.

But melatonin isn’t just about sleep. It’s a powerful antioxidant and tumor suppressor. Melatonin is so important in preventing cancer that the World Health Organization has declared night shift work a “probably carcinogen.” Women with low melatonin levels have a higher risk of breast cancer, and men with prostate cancer tend to be melatonin deficient.

How to Test Melatonin Levels
SleepCheck is a safe, easy-to-use, and reliable melatonin test kit that uses a saliva sample to measure the level of melatonin in your body. This noninvasive and inexpensive melatonin test provides the accuracy of a laboratory analysis with an at-home test. When you receive the melatonin test kit in the mail, you’ll collect the required saliva sample and send it to the lab in a prepaid return mailer. Within 7 to 10 working days after the lab receives your sample, your melatonin level results will be mailed to you.

MORE ABOUT MELATONIN

Melatonin is a hormone secreted primarily by the pineal gland in the brain in response to darkness. It is also made in the eyes, retina, bone marrow, digestive system and by lymphocytes. Among melatonin’s many functions is to help you fall asleep. Your body functions upon a 24-hour cycle of light and dark, called your circadian rhythm, that affects melatonin secretion. When it’s light out, your pineal gland is inactive and melatonin secretion is at a minimum. At night, however, as you're ready to fall asleep, your pineal gland is just starting to wake up, increasing your melatonin levels and helping your body relax and fall asleep. In fact, your melatonin levels peak at around 2 a.m., when you are likely in your deepest sleep of the night.

Besides promoting an optimal sleep pattern, melatonin has been shown to be one of the most potent antioxidants in nature, protecting your body from free radical damage. Melatonin levels can affect cardiovascular function and menstruation. Many anti-aging researchers believe that melatonin is one of the keys to optimal health and longevity.

Q: Does Saliva Provide An Accurate Measure of Melatonin Levels?

A: Saliva Testing is easy, accurate and inexpensive
Saliva screening is a simple, noninvasive way to determine your melatonin levels. Research shows that the levels of hormones in saliva parallels levels of hormones in blood. Salivary testing provides a direct link to hormone levels without the inconvenience and expense of blood collection, by revealing the levels of “unbound” or bioavailable hormones in the system—those directly available to cells in your body.
